数字 英語のリスト
会議で「1,000,000」を英語で読み上げようとして、ゼロを数え直した経験はないでしょうか。数字そのものは知っているのに、口に出す一歩手前で止まる。英語の数字が難しく感じるのは、単語を知らないからではなく、日本語と区切り方や言い回しが少しずつ違うからです。
英語はコンマで3桁ごとに区切り、thousand・million・billion と桁が上がります。日本語は4桁ごとに万・億・兆と数えます。この「3桁と4桁のズレ」が、大きな数を読みにくくしている一番の原因です。
このズレを踏まえたうえで、基本の数から大きな数、序数、分数・小数、時刻、年号、お金の読み方まで、表にまとめました。つまずきやすいところには、日本語との違いをそのつど添えています。

0から99までの読み方です。0は数字として読むときは zero、電話番号や年号などで1桁ずつ読むときは oh(オウ)と読むことが多くあります。

13と30、14と40は、読み間違いより「聞き間違い」で困る組み合わせです。thirteen はうしろの teen を強く読み、thirty は前の thir を強く読みます。聞き取るときは、どこにアクセントが来るか、語尾に n の音があるかで見分けます。相手に伝えるときは thirteen とうしろを伸ばすと、はっきり区別できます。
100以上の数字の読み方
100以上は、コンマの位置がそのまま桁の名前に対応します。

大きな数が読みにくいのは、区切りが日本語とずれているからです。英語は3桁ごとにコンマを打ち、thousand(千)、million(百万)、billion(十億)と上がります。日本語は4桁ごとに万・億・兆です。だから 1,000,000 を見ても、一目で「百万」と結びつきません。
覚えておくと戻しやすいのは、この対応です。million = 100万、billion = 10億、trillion = 1兆。コンマが2つなら million(100万)、3つなら billion(10億)、と数えれば、日本語の桁にすぐ変換できます。
なお、1,500 のような切りのいい数は、one thousand five hundred のほかに fifteen hundred(15×100)とも読みます。1,100〜9,900あたりでは、この hundred 読みが会話でよく出てきます。
序数の読み方
順番を表す序数です。日付にも使い、7月25日は July twenty-fifth、または the twenty-fifth of July と読みます。

分数と小数の読み方
分数

分数は、分子をふつうの数(one, two…)、分母を序数(third, fourth…)で読みます。分子が2以上のときは、分母に s が付きます(2/3 = two-thirds)。1/2 と 1/4 だけは half、quarter という専用の言い方があります。

小数点より下は、位でまとめず1桁ずつ読みます。1.25 は one point twenty-five ではなく、one point two five です。ここは日本語の「一・二五」と同じ感覚で、point のあとを1つずつ読むと覚えておくと間違えません。

K と M は、会話やビジネスでよく使います(年収 50K、資金調達 5M など)。一方 G と T は主にデータ量の話(ギガ・テラ)で使い、金額や人数を口で言うときにはあまり出てきません。話し言葉では、1,000 を a grand、あるいは a G と呼ぶ言い方もあります。

equals は、くだけた場面では is とも言います(seven plus four is eleven)。× は multiplied by、÷ は divided by とも読めます。

上の quarter to / past や half past は、イギリス英語でよく使う言い方です。アメリカ英語では、時刻をそのまま数字で読むのが一番多く、2:45 は two forty-five、4:30 は four thirty と言います。どちらでも通じるので、まずは数字読みを覚えておくと迷いません。ちょうどの時刻には o’clock(three o’clock)、午前・午後は a.m. / p.m.、正午は noon、真夜中は midnight を使います。

年号は、ふつう二桁ずつに分けて読みます(1999 = nineteen ninety-nine)。迷いやすいのは2000年代です。2000 は two thousand、2005 は two thousand five または twenty oh five、2010以降は twenty ten のように、また二桁読みに戻ります。

数列と級数に関する英語
英語では、数を並べたものが sequence(数列)、その項を足し合わせたものが series(級数)です。日本語は「数列」「級数」と字が違うので迷いませんが、英語は一語違いなので混同されがちです。series には必ず足し算が含まれる、と覚えておくと区別できます。なお「等差数列の和」は英語で arithmetic series と呼びます。

発音:sequence /ˈsiːkwəns/、series /ˈsɪriːz/。series は単数形も複数形も series で(a series / two series)、a serie という形はありません。
sequence と progression:アメリカの教科書は arithmetic sequence、イギリス・インド系の教科書は arithmetic progression(AP / GP)を使います。指すものは同じです。
文学や映画
数字はタイトルや設定にもよく登場します。ジョージ・オーウェルの『1984』やレイ・ブラッドベリの『華氏451度』は、数字そのものが物語の中心テーマにつながっています。映画『セブン』は七つの大罪に基づく連続殺人を、『500日のサマー』は500日間の恋の浮き沈みを描いています。英語のタイトルのまま眺めてみると、数字の読み方が自然に頭に残ります。
